From RotorLab is a pair of of Brembo 18Z calipers for the brake upgrade on Audi B5 S4 and B6 or B7 A4 or S4. Also can be adapted for the Mk5 and Mk6 GTI and GLI. These have been nicely refurbished, all piston boots are in perfect shape or have been replaced, they've been media-blasted, cleaned, a hi-temp ceramic-infused epoxy coating has been applied, followed by a high-temp epoxy clearcoat, then the logos are replaced, those are then clearcoated over to protect them, and they are ready to be used. The pictures tell it all.
CALIPER COLOR CHOICES:
---Deep Bantam red as seen in the pictures
---Carbon metallic silver (in pics)
---Gloss black
---new---now available also in medium dark blue--similar to Audi Nogaro blue (in pics)
Those are the available colors. Understand that enough time MUST be allowed for the epoxy color of your choice to fully cure before it is shipped, so that the finish does not get ruined by the packaging. This *may* be up to 7 days from the time we receive funds.
LOGO STYLE AND COLOR CHOICES:
---The Porsche logo can be had in either black, white or red.
---We also now have the Brembo logo available in white and black
---Can also be had with no logo whatsoever
...your choice. Those are the logos that we have, and the available colors---which is 10 times more than anyone else out there offers. Other places you simply get what they have available or what they send you. With Rotorlab you get a multitude of choices and options. Please do not ask about other logos or other colors.
Please send us a note when purchasing as to your color choices, such as "Red calipers with white Porsche lettering".
MOUNTING TAB MOD FOR B5 OR B6/B7:
To run these on B5, B6 or B7 with the 345mm rotors, there is a mild modification that must be done, milling 50 thousandths off the inner side of both mounting tabs, so that the caliper will sit dead center over the rotor. Failure to do this will cause the caliper to strike the rotor. We can send you pics of this if necessary so you can see what has to be done. If you wish to have this mod done so that this becomes a bolt-on job, we have a shop we work with that charges 60 dollars to do this. We will not charge you more than it costs us. This must be arranged separatley from this auction because everyone is different---some people do not want this modification done. Please send us a message if you want it done.
BOLT KIT FOR B5 OR B6/B7:
At RotorLab we have now developed an excellent bolt kit for B5, B6 or B7 A4Q and S4 owners, when doing the mod with OE or aftermarket 345mm or 350mm rotors. They are grade 12.9 bolts (the highest commercially available), with sleeves that are copper-coated outside and teflon-coated inside, to resist binding up upon removal, which other kits have issues with. The nuts are stainless steel and the washers are zinc-plated. Superior all around.
Our normal bolt kit price is $42, but if you purchase the calipers we will include the bolt kit for only 35 dollars, which is noticeably less than others out there, and of superior quality. This also is arranged separately from this auction, so please send us a message if you want the bolt kit.
WARNING ABOUT BUYING THESE FROM A WRECKING YARD:
PART 1) COST----We get our calipers from several different sources across the country. Be warned---buying these from a wrecking yard and trying to refurbish them yourself can quickly turn into a nightmare----an expensive nightmare, especially if you yourself do not have the right equipment (compressed air, media-blasting facility, correct tooling, epoxy-application implements, etc) or the right experience. Most wrecking yards want at least $275 apiece or more for these (which is ridiculous), plus shipping, and they're almost always nasty, caked with dirt and brake dust, the logos are worn away, they almost always have torn piston boots that need to be replaced (which means the whole thing basically needs to be rebuilt, which of course costs even MORE money and time), and they'll definitely look nothing like these.
PART 2) CRACKED PISTONS: About one in every three calipers we get in has at least one cracked piston. YES---CRACKED. (see the pic) The inner bank of pistons on 17Z and 18Z calipers are all aluminum. The outer bank, however, are a 2-part piston: a composite head mated to an aluminum base. The composite heads often have a cracked section on the crown. So either that piston has to be removed and repaired (depending on the extent of damage) using a composite high-temp filler/bonding agent, or completely replaced, and all new seals and boots put on as well. Brembo and Centric no longer manufacture the 2-part pistons, only the all -aluminum ones. Those cost 28 to 45 dollars each--plus you have to buy a rebuild kit, which is only sold for an entire caliper (all 6 pistons) and costs around 55 to 62 dollars.
BIG NOTE ON THE BLEEDERS AND CROSSOVER TUBES:
We have received several replies now regarding switching the crossover tubes and bleeders to the opposite side of the caliper. Folks this is NOT mandatory at all. It is an "option" that some people choose to do.
Why do some people do it? The Touareg/Cayenne/Q7 calipers are originally mounted on the front side of the wheel, whereas on a B5, B6 or B7, or Allroad, calipers are mounted on the back side. The three pistons on each side of the caliper are slightly different size. Brembo built them such that the smallest piston would be striking against the pad (and eventually the rotor, of course) on the leading/advancing side of the rotor as it turns. The caliper must be installed with the bleeder valves facing up, of course. When you move the caliper to the back of the wheel, this puts the smaller piston against the trailing edge of the rotor, instead of the leading edge. So some people choose to swap the left and right calipers, and swap the bleeders and crossover tubes to the opposite sides of the caliper, in order to maintain that piston orientation and yet still keep the bleeders facing up.
Is this "required"? Absolutely not. I myself have been running the Z calipers on my xxxx S4 for over a year now and did NOT swap the bleeders and crossover tubes, and I have substantially better braking power than stock, and very even pad wear. (I check it regularly). If you want to swap them over, that is your choice...we would simply suggest that you be very gentle removing and reinstalling them. Take your time--the threads on these calipers are metric fine 1.00 and are delicate. But anyone that tells you that this is a "required" part of the swap, or that the calipers 'will not work' or 'won't work properly' or 'wont work as well' without doing it is very much mistaken. It is an option, not a requirement.
BOTTOM LINE: The threads on these calipers are in perfect shape. The bleeders and crossover tubes were reinstalled firmly but extremely gently, and are not 'super tight' in there----they will come out without difficulty. If you choose to swap the bleeders and tubes and end up cross-threading and damaging them in the process, we will assume no liability whatsoever.
COMPARISON:
Compare these to the 18Z "BBK" kits from the likes of JHM ($xxxx at last check), RB Performance ($xxxx the other day) and a few others. If you think that's BS, go to their websites and you'll see that it is the truth. Get these and we're talking WAY less for essentially/functionally the same thing. I myself run a similar setup on my xxxx B6.5 S4 and LOVE it. And these look absolutely stunning on the car, not just a nice increase in braking power.
ADDITIONAL PARTS:
You also get the center rod and spring clip (sometimes called the "caliper pad mounting kit") with this----it normally costs about another 40 dollars. (See the picture)
THIS PARTICULAR SET WILL ALSO COME WITH A SET OF PADS (SEE THE PICTURE)---CAME IN ON A SET OF CALIPERS AND HAD CLEARLY JUST BEEN REPLACED. PROBABLY HAVE LESS THAN 500 MILES ON THEM. IF YOU DECIDE TO USE THEM, YOU JUST SAVED YOURSELF ANYWHERE FROM 60 TO 90 DOLLARS (AVERAGE) ON PADS.
First $575 gets the pair.
YOUR PURCHASE, YOUR PARTS:
If you purchase a set of these calipers, we will send you pictures of the calipers before they ship. The pictures you will receive will be pics of YOUR PARTS, not some bullcrap "stock photo" like most other shops use. This way you will be able to see exactly what's coming before it ships. No other shop will do this for you.
