We focus on counting, technique, reading, rudiments, as well as exploration and individual musical development. Our curriculum is flexible and can be tailored to beginners to advanced players as well as to children, teens or adults.
The Rhythm Lab is fully equipped with 4 drum sets, 2 sets of timbales, 10 conga drums, a professional set of Musser vibes, and various other drums and hand percussion instruments, including smaller instruments for children.
The studio is also equipped with 2 powerful Macintosh Logic Pro based Digital Audio Workstations
We have Logic Pro, Garage band, Ableton Live and iTunes as well as thousands of programmed loops, grooves and samples for students to play along with.

Doug Smith founder and owner of The Rhythm Lab traveled the globe playing drums, percussion, and vibraphone with Portland’s Pink Martini. Doug was also a member of the xxxx World Champion Garfield Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. His education includes a degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Oregon, which he attended on partial scholarship. He now dedicates his time to teaching people of all ages the art of percussion and drumming with an emphasis on playing and learning because it’s fun.
